Summertime, sweet summertime

Posted

While the official first day of summer is over a month away, we have been experiencing some fantastic warm weather here in Texas. This warm weather has us hitting our favorite water spots a little early and that has us all a little giddy.

We Texas folks love warm weather, water holes, and cold beverages. Here in south Texas we have a hundred days with an average temperature of 90 degrees or higher. A true southerner in every sense of the word, the hotter the sun, the happier is my heart. If you are not from Texas and make it this way, we are going to share a few must visit places that are near and dear to our heart that will cool your back sides and fill your bellies. But first, we ask that you don’t tell everyone, as we like to keep some of these to ourselves.

River Floatin’ is a mainstay for our summer. If you have never visited New Braunfels, load up the family, sunscreen, cooler and hit the road for some of the best tube floatin’ in the country. If the people you float alongside are not some of the nicest strangers you have ever met, I will buy you a cold one. You just have to find me in my donut tube, on one of my two favorite rivers. Hint, my first favorite is the Comal and my second is the Guadalupe.

If you love an old dance hall, you will love Texas’ oldest, Gruene Hall. If you want some nostalgia with an “open air” dance floor, and a great summer concert line up, this is the place for you. The other best thing, it IS family friendly, in the sense of you being okay with bringing your kid to a dance hall, or a bar. Hey, I’m not judging. Us southern folks take pride in our kids knowing how to two step and waltz before they can walk.

Since I am keeping my favorite spots confined to New Braunfels for this piece, I will wrap up my faves with an eatery like I promised. In the back yard of Gruene Hall, you will find The Gristmill. This is a river restaurant that overlooks the Guadalupe and serves up some great home cooking. In the busy summer hours there might be a wait, but their gorgeous garden area makes the wait enjoyable and the outdoor bar will serve you well. It is magical in the evening hours.

Stock shows, BBQ, beer, rodeo oh my. It’s rodeo time in Texas. It is the time of year when we get our boots buffed, buckles shined, and dust off those cowboy hats. If you have never experienced a rodeo, make 2017 the year you break out of your comfort zone and rodeo. With Houston being [...]
